Common way of holding nenju at the Buddhist Service

There isn't any difference between informal and formal, but formally you make double ring out of large single ring and put them on your left hand. Or alternatively you can hang them on your both hands as shown in these photos.

Formal way of holding nenju by sect
Shingon sect
Put nenju in large "8" shape and put both ends around your middle fingers and join your hands in prayer.
  Jodo sect
This photo shows two separate rings but they are linked in chain form. Put these two rings together and put them on your left hand.
  Zen set (Rinzai sect, Sodo sect)
Make double ring out of Honren (the one with 108 beads) and put them on your left hand.

 
 
     
Tendai sect
Hold it between your index finger and middle finger and join your hands together in prayer.
  Nichiren sect
Make "8" shape and put one end with two tassels and the other end with three tassels around your middle fingers in prayer.
